The McDonough Democrat, Inc. is the parent company comprised of two smaller businesses, the McDonough Democrat and the Spoon River Press.

The McDonough Democrat, established in 1884, is a small hometown newspaper published weekly and full of local news, pictures and advertisements for the Bushnell, Prairie City, Avon and their surrounding communities. Like many other small town newspapers, the McDonough Democrat is correspondent supported, and relies heavily on people in the surrounding area to provide the news from their community.

The Spoon River Press is a full size commercial printing business located under the same roof as the newspaper. Like many newspapers, various degrees of printing services were always available at the McDonough Democrat office, but in the late 1970's, when The McDonough Democrat, Inc. was formed, the Spoon River Press was greatly expanded with a full size commercial printing business. Still considered a "small" printing business with under 25 employees, the Spoon River Press is the largest commercial print shop in the area.
